Zion Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church
Zion Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church
Zion Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church is located at Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jefferson Streets. Built in 1858 as Second Presbyterian Church, it was sold to the AME church in 1866. Hiram R. Revels became the first minister. Revels went on to become the first black man to serve in either house of the U.S. Congress when he filled the unexpired Senate term of Jefferson Davis in 1870. Revels also went on to become the first president of Alcorn A&M College, which is now Alcorn State University, in Lorman, Mississippi.
